Fan economy refers to a new business operation model that seeks to profit from fans' devotion to celebrities. However, China's idol economy includes much more than just a business relationship between celebrities and fans. It is a culture where we can identify beliefs, attachment, attitudes, and behaviours.


The booming idol economy in China is estimated to be US$1 trillion by 2023, with a year-on-year growth of around 24%.


Three majors defined categories for the fans: "CASUAL", "REGULAR", and "SUPER".

  • "Casual" fans describe fans as low on emotion, financial commitment and involvement. They are interested at first by the appearance of the celebrities; they also spend little time getting involved in the celebrity’s activities.

  • "Regular" fans or focused fans depends on the level of appreciation. They have more appreciation of the celebrities' performance and personality. They spend more time and money on related products. Regular fans are active on social media and more aware of significant events such as concerts.

  • "Super" fans or Devoted fans are willing to pay substantial amounts of money to support their celebrities. Devoted fans would defend their celebrities as if they were a member of their own family.
